Thanksgiving is a great time for all us in the US to get together with family and friends. It´s nice to get together and celebrate, and to socialize with the ones you love. However, for all of us that are in the process of trying to lose those unwanted ponds of excess fat – thanksgiving and all that yummy food can be a problem!
Big family gatherings like this are dangerous for anyone trying to lose or maintain weight. On our tables is usually dishes like turkey, sweet potatoes, that fantastic cranberry sauce, great tasting mashed potatoes with gravy, vegetables and pumpkin/pecan pies. These are not fat or unhealthy by themselves! It is the way that they are prepared that is the problem here.
So, what to do when you want to eat and still not gain weight? We have put together a small list of things to remember when preparing that thanksgiving meal:
- Remove the skin from the turkey. This is an important point as the skin itself contains a lot of calories.
- Use fat free milk or less heavy cream for the gravy. It can still taste like you want it.
- Steam the vegetables instead of putting butter all over them
- Use low fat dough as a base for the pie.
- AND MOST IMPORTANT: think about your portion size!
